Penn State University, USA - Cave application with 3D stereo-technology

Two faculties of the Pennsylvania State University, one of the oldest and largest public universities in the USA, have jointly developed cave system to achieve primarily a higher efficiency for the use of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies and their dissemination. The aim of the two faculties, "Penn State's Information Technology Services (ITS) and School of Architecture and Landscape Archi-tecture, was therefore to make appropriate applications easier, cheaper and administrative.

The university, founded in 1855 has now developed its Cave applications visualized with the special stereoscopic playback software "BS Contact Stereo" from Bitmanagement Software GmbH in Berg. Bitmanagement is a manufacturer of interactive and Internet-enabled 3D visualization software specifically meeting the high requirements for stereoscopic playback without special eyewear.

The projects run under the name "The Immersive Environments Lab (IEL), and" Immersive Construction Lab "(Icon). The former could be translated about having a "sense of the virtual environment" in which for example design projects for very different areas with special visualization techniques, such as the 3D stereoscopic playback can be studied. The viewer can then design drafts with almost all senses and then can judge. Icon however aims besides at simplifying the use of VR technologies to use in developing sections of the AEC industry (Architecture / Architecture, Maschinen-bau-/Engineering and Construction / Construction).

CAVE systems are visualization systems with two three or more high spatial projection screens, a real three-dimensional impression. The generated stereoscopic effect is determined by two projectors on each screen , the active use of special glasses for most applications is no longer needed. All pages are synchronized with each other, whereby the position of the viewer of a tracking system is detected, so his perspective on his current location is adjusted and modified accordingly. Due to the immersive perception the stereoscopic 3D view can be used to display virtual products with visible depth effect analysis.

Cave applications are used not only in those areas but also in medical research. Here for example, Caves assist scientists in the exploration of the human heart, or of enzymes of the human DNA by specific 3D stereoscopic display sizes. In training and field training Caves can to optimize the learning experience by simulating the knowledge transfer with the first practice combined with the experience of learning.
